V Engineering Announces Project Continuum Hybrid Battery Programme for the McLaren P1.
London, Friday 17th July 2026: V Engineering, the independent McLaren engineering centre based in Berkshire, today announces Project Continuum, a new high-voltage battery programme developed for the McLaren P1.
Part of the V Group and established in 2021, V Engineering is a highly recognised independent specialist in servicing and supporting for current and historic McLaren Automotive models. Over the past four years, V Engineering has focused on developing a Hybrid Battery solution as an alternative to those currently available.
The McLaren P1 was first unveiled as a concept at the 2012 Paris Motor Show before making its debut at the 2013 Geneva International Motor Show. Production began in October 2013 and concluded in December 2015. The original hybrid battery cells used in the P1 commenced manufactured in 2010, meaning many are now approaching 16 years of service with many units now having to be replaced due to deteriorating cells rendering the car unable to be driven.
Project Continuum from V Engineering now offers current and future McLaren P1 owners an alternative high-voltage battery solution improving energy storage and reducing the overall weight of the original battery with no penalty to the existing power delivery. Another key user feature of the new battery is the offering of extended EV range over the factory production unit.
Developed in collaboration with engineers involved on the original McLaren P1 programme the battery features a glycol-based cooling system with significantly improved heat rejection properties from the newly developed cells. The battery solution is built around a proven, high-performance 21700 lithium battery module engineered to FIA Formula E requirements to offer motorsport-grade technology with an innovative ‘Plug & Play’ approach from V Engineering to improve performance and reliability while retaining compatibility with the vehicle’s existing electrical architecture.
Project Continuum represents the first phase of a broader powertrain development programme intended to provide long-term technical support for McLaren P1 owners.
Customer installations are scheduled to begin in Spring 2027 with V Engineering currently in discussions with owners from the UK & Europe, the Middle East and the United States.

The P1 was launched in 2013 to glowing reviews from the international motoring press, and it was widely regarded as the best of the ground-breaking holy trinity of hybrid hypercars. A total of around 400 examples of road-going and track-only P1s were built, and our lead engineers were at McLaren throughout its development and production.
